Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs ground beef
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 45 yellow potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella
  • Fresh parsley, for garnish


Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F and grease a 9×13 baking dish.
  2. Brown ground beef in a skillet, then drain excess fat.
  3. Add onion and garlic; cook until softened.
  4. Stir in tomato paste, broth, paprika, salt, and pepper. Simmer 5–7 minutes.
  5. Peel and thinly slice the potatoes.
  6. In a saucepan, melt butter and whisk in flour to make a roux.
  7. Slowly add milk, whisking until thickened. Stir in both cheeses until smooth.
  8. Layer half of the potatoes in the dish, then spread the beef mixture on top.
  9. Top with remaining potatoes and pour cheese sauce evenly over everything.
  10. Cover with foil and bake 40 minutes. Uncover and bake 15–20 more until golden.
  11. Rest 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with parsley.
